Does Tea Tree Oil Work For Infections and Fungus?

Skin fungal infection is the most common disease occurring in the summer. The diseases affect the skin of humans and cause inflammation in any part of the body. Some common skin fungal skin infections are acne, ringworm, nail fungus and athlete’s foot. These conditions are not serious, but really annoying and irritating. However, you can treat them easily by medications.

If you search for a quick fix for a case of the skin fungal infections, you may see many products that contain tea tree oil. In fact, tea tree oil is a liquid derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree (an Australian tea tree). Now, you can find the ingredient in over-the-counter treatments that promise to remove dental plaque and freshen breath. But, does tea tree oil work? – Many experts believe tea tree oil can do for fungus and infections.

How Does Tea Tree Oil Work?

Tea tree oil includes natural antifungal properties. So, it can combat all kinds of skin fungal infections. Tea tree oil also has cleansing components that give amazing antibacterial qualities. Besides, the essential oil includes antimicrobial, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. Medical science has yet to claim the use of tea tree oil to treat medical conditions. But, many people have been applying tea tree oil on common skin conditions and they observe the best result.

Due to a natural ingredient, tea tree oil contains a very low risk of side effects. For better treatment, tea tree oil can be diluted with either water or another oil. Most people used tea tree oil and saw how it worked for skin conditions. In particular,

  • Tea tree oil can treat rashes and itching
  • Tea tree oil can reduce irritations
  • Tea tree oil can heal infections and fungus

Research also reveals about tea tree oil, promoted as a cure for acnes, toenail fungus and athlete’s foot.

Tea Tree Oil for Acne

Jessica J. Krant, a member of Consumer Reports’ medical advisory board, said that diluted tea tree oil might help moderate acne. It is because of the antiseptic, antifungal and antibacterial properties in tea tree oil. In fact, the essential oil has an ability to decrease the redness and inflammation associated with acne.

Although more research are still ongoing, many recent studies are promising. A review of 7 studies in Australia in 2015, concluded that products include > 5 percent tea tree oil, applied 2 daily for several weeks, can reduce acne.

Another study compared the essential oil to using benzoyl peroxide as acne treatment. So, many people use tea tree oil to treat outbreaks of acne. You can:

  • First, wash your face.
  • Then, dilute 1 or 2 drops of tea tree oil into water.
  • Soak a clean cotton ball, cotton swab or cotton pad in water with tea tree oil.
  • Rub the infected skin with this cotton.
  • Leave it a few minutes, then wash it off.

In some cases, using tea tree oil alone cannot be strong enough to clear up acne. You can combine it with benzoyl peroxide to improve the efficiency. However, using tea tree oil to treat acne may cause mild rashes.

Tea Tree Oil for Athlete’s Foot

Jessica J. Krant also said that tea tree oil might be effective for athlete’s foot in milder cases. In fact, a study in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology has shown that solution with 25- 30 percent tea tree could clear up athlete’s foot within 4 weeks. However, 4 percent of study participants developed an itchy rash.

Tea tree oil can fight against fungi that cause athlete’s foot. In particular, the ingredient can relieve the itching and soothe burns. To deal with athlete’s foot, you can:

  • Soak a cotton ball in water
  • Then, add two or three drops of tea tree to it
  • Apply the mixture of water and tea tree oil on your foot
  • Let your nails dry, then wash it off

Many studies have found that tea tree oil can be less effective at treating athlete’s foot than antifungal medications. Tea tree oil cannot work best if used alone. So, experts recommend antifungal treatments that include other associated substances. For example, Fugacil is one of the best treatments for skin fungal infection. It contains Garlic, Tea tree oil, Vinegar and Coconut oil that can powerfully fight against fungi. Most people apply Fugacil and observe the result in less than 6 days.

Tea Tree Oil for Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus normally begins with white or yellow spots under the tip of your toenails. The condition may change the colors of your nails. In particular, the toenail may turn into yellow- brown color. It can also become brittle enough that your toenail break off. Toenail fungus can make your nails thicker and even crumble at the edge. In the serious case, the condition may cause pain, itchiness and irritation. Toenail fungus can loosen and even separate the nail from the bed.

A study compared tea tree oil with clotrimazole as toenail fungus treatment. Its antifungal properties have been proved to take care of fungi that can infect nails. So, many kinds of fungus can be removed through use of tea tree oil.

To treat toenail fungus, you can dilute 2 drops of tea tree oil in water. Then, apply it on the affected areas.

Moreover, tea tree oil can relieve ringworm. It is a fungal skin condition that appears with a red, raised, circular rash on the skin. Repeated application with tea tree oil can take care of this unsightly ring. You can soak a cotton ball in water. Then, add 3 drops of tea tree oil to water. And, rub it 2 times daily until ringworm disappears.

It might be worth applying tea tree oil for acne, toenail fungus and athlete’s foot. However, for better treatment, you should combine tea tree oil with other ingredients. Fugacil contains tea tree oil and other antifungal substances that are approved by FDA. You can apply it to kill fungi and prevent recurrence of infection. Many pharmacists also recommend Fugacil for all kinds of skin fungal infections.
